After turning up to rowing drinks in Freshers Week determined to take the free booze and run, I was almost surprised to find myself up at 6am a week later to train for Christ Church Regatta. I spent the rest of the year as a committed, enthusiastic but ultimately quite bad oarsman, cheated (cheated I tell you) out of blades in both Torpids and Eights. Still, the dinners were good. As Social Secs Juliette and I will have to make sure they’re good again this year, we’ll also organise crew dates and other drunken boatie revelry and generally make it that little bit harder to get up at 6 the next morning.
