Committee

The boat club is governed by a committee consisting of student representatives and an overseeing Senior Member (currently Douglas Dupree). All are unelected, or elected by the previous committee, and volunteer their time to the club. Here they are:

President - Jack Devlin
I've been rowing and sculling since school, and despite my best efforts I can't seem to stop. I've rowed for Balliol for two years and also rowed with Oxford University Lightweight reserve boat, Nephthys in 2009. As President I will oversee the hard work of the Men's and Women's Captains and the other officers, as well as taking care of the water safety for the club. I hope we can have another successful year, with as many freshers joining as possible and those that took up rowing last year continuing to win blades and glory!
Men's Captain - Edward Jacobs
I'm the Men's Captain. Think Captain Kirk, think Captain Scarlett. Add a little Captain Birdseye and that's a fairly accurate sketch of who I am. Aided by my vice-captains Chris and Simon, I oversee all the training of men at BCBC, make sure boats, coxes, rowers and coaches all know where they should be and am generally the brains of this operation. I started rowing as a fresher to help improve my 2k erg, but quickly learnt to stop pointing out that everyone else in the boat club had got their priorities back to front. When I'm not rushing into front-stops, catching late and finishing messily, I'm doing just enough work to make my tutors think I have an appropriate rowing-degree balance.
Women's Captain - Beth Mumford
Having been assured by my family upon getting into Oxford that rowing involved early mornings and so wasn’t the thing for me, I felt determined to stick it out for at least a term. And now here I am 3 terms later with captaincy, a blade and more stash than you can wave a rigger-jigger at. In my opinion rowing is the most addictive sport you can try; it comprises a perfect balance of hard work and training (and hence immense satisfaction when you achieve your goals) with teamwork and enough socialising to make sure there’s always an excuse not to do actual work.
Secretary - Katie Jones
Treasurer - Alice Lighton
I thought I'd give rowing and coxing a go when I started at Oxford, because it was Oxford and that's what you are meant to do. I currently cox M1 and look after some money.
Men's Vice Captain - Chris Arthurs
I started rowing when I moved to Oxford in order to try something quite different from anything I'd done before, and as luck would have it it turned out that I really quite enjoyed it- the training and fitness, the adrenaline of racing, the team spirit, the nights out... the list goes on. It's a list that I think more people should experience, so as a VC I hope to help bring plenty more people into the boat club to stay.
Men's Vice Captain - Simon Wan
I got involved in the boat club through coxing and later sculling and I've loved it ever since. This year I'm Men's Vice-Captain along with Chris.
Women's Vice Captain - Kirsty Duffy
I came to Oxford last year absolutely determined to not take up rowing, or any other kind of activity that required me to get up before it was light! However, despite my best efforts I've been sucked in, and am now Womens' Vice Captain, captaining W2.
Web Officer - Chris Wright
I have been at Balliol for 7 years and am currently a D.Phil. student. I have rowed in the 1st VIII for the last six years and was proud to be part of the 2008 Headship crew. My main duty as Web Officer is to maintain the website, helping to keep everyone up to date with the activities of the boat club.
