Thursday of 8th Week (10th March) will see Balliol running the second annual ‘Spring 2nds Regatta’, an event open primarily to boats in lower divisions of the bumps chart, with the aim of enriching the experience of rowing for those who may not otherwise get to compete in external regattas – and of improving collegiate rowing throughout Oxford.

BCBC believes that college rowing is not solely for the benefit of 1st VIIIs, and so we’re once again extending an invitation to the crews of the lower divisions to compete in Spring 2nds, a side-by-side knockout regatta along a course from Longbridges to the cox’s stone. The event is scheduled for Thursday 10th March (8th Week).

Entries are welcome in the VIIIs categories (£31 entry) from all crews placed lower than the ChCh 2nd VIIIs in the Eights Week bumps tables (since they’re the highest 2nd VIIIs). In the event of oversubscription, priority will be given to the higher placed crews. In the event of undersubscription, we’ll alter the competition format to maximise the amount of racing each crew gets — last year most crews got at least 3 races. We’ve also opened up a IVs category too. No preachy ideological rationale behind this one, it’s just there in case enough 4-man crews fancy a post-Torpids jolly. No restrictions on entry, but we’ll need at least 4 crews to make the £12 entry fee worthwhile.

Once again this year we’re committed to running close to break-even, the slight price increases reflect unavoidable increases in running costs.
